30 For 30 is special to HPF.  During the month of April it is Child Abuse Awareness Month and we do one blog post a day to bring awareness to this month.

Believe Survivors

Therapy center Turning Point in York, PA is taking charge during Child Abuse Prevention month, also Sexual Assault Awareness Month. They are focusing on believing sexual abuse survivors. They aim to change the culture of secrecy, guilt, and shame, re-focusing instead on empowering the survivors to talk about the crime. How Survivors Inspire Us

HPF values the stories told by our heroes last week. Stories of hurt, abandonment, fear, loss, as well as finding hope and love in the struggle to overcome abuse. There are many more stories out there, so we would like to continue to spread the message of hope by recommending more stories. Finding Fish: A Memoir is the captivating true story of how Antwone Fisher struggled to cope with child abuse and find healing while serving in the U.S. Navy. Finding a Separate Peace in an Age of Mental Illness

This will be the hardest piece of writing for me so far in my career, because I will attempt to delve into my own mental illness in an attempt to help those with a mental illness. Especially those who may consider bringing a weapon to school to harm others, or those who do not recognize the bully in themselves. Because I was a bully. And I know how hard and painful it is to be kind to others, when you have not been treated fairly in life from a young age. I would first like to reflect on a book [...]

Time Spent In A Psych Ward

The first time I allowed myself to get a psychological evaluation at a hospital was one of the most normalizing experiences of my life. I have a mental illness, and I decided to take myself off of my medication without really working with my doctor on it. Why did I do that? Because the stigma was too great, and I truly felt that if the society I lived in could not accept that I needed to take medication and see therapists for the abuse I sustained when I was a little girl... I could not accept myself either. Have you [...]

Career Day with HPF!

The Humanity Preservation Foundation is proud to have participated in the District Wide Career Day for the Black Horse Pike Regional School  District!  How does this relate to Child Abuse Prevention Month?  The foundation had the opportunity to be present among 800 high school juniors, provide materials for what we do to prevent interpersonal violence, along with speaking face to face with students!  As one student asked after we explained what our goal was, “How do WE do that?” We work hard to prevent child abuse through educating, telling stories of hope and survival, as well as community outreach. By [...]

Speaking At Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia

The Humanity Preservation Foundation was once again extended the opportunity to have Rhett Hackett present to their first year med students.  The lecture included three speakers discussing Child Abuse, Domestic or Intimate Partner Violence, and Sexual Abuse.  The students were then encouraged to participate in a Q&A. Two hundred students attended, and Rhett received a standing ovation with the highest amount of questions asked in the five years that this lecture has been taking place.  The Humanity Preservation Foundation is very grateful for this opportunity each year as educating future medical professionals on the signs of sexual trauma in children [...]

Thank You St Mary’s Church of Ardmore, PA!

The Humanity Preservation Foundation wishes to thank St. Mary’s Church of Ardmore, PA for inviting us to speak during their special Lent Series!  Fr. Mike Giansiracusa conducts a special 6 week series during Lent in which he finds a movie that focuses on a topic and then provides the opportunity for those attending to talk about the film, ask questions, and explore how it relates and connects to the church.  On this particular evening the movie was “Spotlight.” The topic of conversation related back to the sexual abuse that took place in the Catholic Church, and how the Boston Globe [...]

Preparing Your Child for a Doctor Visit

Visiting the doctor can be a scary experience for children. They are often not sure what to expect and may have some pre-conceived fears about going to the doctor. When your child is prepared, they will likely be less anxious, and more comfortable and cooperative at their upcoming visit.
